Medical Encounter exists to:

Build community among AACH members by celebrating their creativity, diversity, and energy.

Provide voice to the AACH by reaching out to communities of patients and health care providers worldwide.

Support the education and research missions of AACH by highlighting innovative work occurring both inside and outside of the Academy.
Medical Encounter is a benefit of membership in the American Academy on Communication in Healthcare.
Guidelines for Authors
Medical Encounter welcomes submissions of articles, stories, poetry and other literary works relating to the patient-practitioner relationship.
Medical Encounter reaches a community of patients, practitioners, educators, researchers, and leaders who have an interest in promoting respect and understanding between patients and health providers.
- E-mail submissions to Chris Pallozola, (chris@AACHonline.org) as a Microsoft Word document.
- Do not exceed 1500 words
- No page breaks
- Single space
- Include title page with author names, address and email for the corresponding author, word count, and column appropriate for the article.
- Number references in parentheses on the line of text. Number references consecutively as cited in the text.
- List all authors when there are six or fewer; when there are seven or more, list the first three and "et al." Follow the format set forth in "Uniform Requirements for Manuscripts Submitted to Biomedical Journals" (see citations listed above).
- Authors must double-check the completeness and accuracy of all references. Examples: Braddock CH, Fihn SD, LevinsonW, Jonsen AR, Pearlman RA. How doctors and patients discuss routine clinical decisions - informed decision making in the outpatient setting. J Gen Intern Med. 1997;12:339-45. Fleiss JL. Description of Columns
Behavioral Science
This column will present clinical, theoretical and research data from the behavioral sciences relevant to understanding and improving the physician-patient relationship, enhancing patient self-efficacy, and addressing mental health and psychosocial issues which influence illness, adherence and patient well-being. Please submit behavioral science articles or ideas to alyce_getler@hms.harvard.edu for consideration.
Pediatric Perspective
Inaugurated in 2000, Pediatric Perspective is a column devoted to work with children, adolescents and their families. I invite you to submit narratives, essays, short research reports or summaries, editorials, and other pieces on this topic.
Ethics Column
Book Reviews
The book review column accepts reviews of recent books that are pertinent to our interest in communication and clinician-patient relationship. Reviews should be concise and emphasize the reasons our members might want to read the work. The books reviewed should be available currently.
Occasional Commentary
A series of occasional reflections on clinical practice, education, administration, values-in-action, sense-making and life.
Poetry Encounter
Encounter celebrates the importance of word and image, metaphor and meaning in medical practice. We invite submissions of original poetry, prose commentaries on poems, and reflections on the role of poetry in healing and the patient-physician relationship. Poem length is limited to 35 lines and prose contributions to a maximum of 500 words.

Research
The research column provides a forum for AACH members and others to present relevant investigative projects and ideas to the ME readership. Included articles may fall anywhere along a spectrum from an early "progress report" to a summary of a previously published project.
Getting Acquainted
The 'Getting Acquainted' column is devoted to introducing AACH members to each other. Getting Acquainted aims to foster a sense of community. If you have a suggestion for a member feature, please contact Shak Rehman: shakaib.rehman@va.gov
Assessment
This column will address relevant and/or current issues of concern in the areas of evaluation of clinical skills in undergraduate and graduate medical education.
