We would like to thank the Patient Education and Counseling Journal (PEC) and its publisher, Elsevier , who have graciously agreed for the second year to provide travel expense funding (up to $500 each) to recipients of the Payer and Engel awards We are now inviting your nominations for the 12th annual George Engel Award For Outstanding Research Contributing to the Theory, Practice and Teaching of Effective Health Care Communication and Related Skills and the sixth annual Lynn Payer Award For Outstanding Contributions to the Literature on the Theory, Practice and Teaching of Effective Health Care Communication and Related Skills. These awards will be presented at the AACH Forum/ International Conference on Communication in Healthcare taking place October 9-12, 2007 in Charleston, S.C Dr. George L. Engel was an internist with psychoanalytic training whose articulation of the "biopsychosocial model" in the 1970's and widespread recognition in the 1980's had a profound impact on the clinical approach to patients, the medical interview, and the patient-doctor relationship. Lynn Payer was a journalist and managing editor of Medical Encounter for over a decade. She was the author of the classic book, "Medicine and Culture" and wrote hundreds of news stories and features during her career. Please send a nomination letter that outlines why you believe the nominee should receive the award and attach a copy of the nominee's curriculum vitae. You may send in your nominations for either one or both awards. Please verify that your nominee will be available to attend the awards ceremony at the conference lunch Wednesday, October 10.
