FIT: Learning Opportunities and Resources

While the opportunities to work with other FITs and to co-facilitate or facilitate will occur in AACH-sponsored courses, much of your learning will take place at home. You should plan on accomplishing many of your learning goals in the context of practice and feedback during daily activities, supplemented by reading, thoughtful self- observation and reflection, as well as discussion with colleagues, other trainees and AACH facilitators. In addition to your learning plan and interactions with your guide and other FITs, potential learning resources include a personal log of training experiences, AACH Regional, National, One-Day, and Winter Facilitator Training courses, the Standards Document, the Bibliography of Educational Resources, and a personal project.

Personal Log:

As a way to consolidate and document your learning and growth, we will ask you to keep a personal log of your training experiences. It will be worthwhile to share portions of it with your guide, and it will be helpful to you as you reflect on your experiences and assess your progress.

AACH Courses:

The five-day AACH National Faculty Development Course will be a key opportunity, not only to advance knowledge and skills, but to meet with your guide, other trainees, and other AACH faculty. In addition, the AACH participates in regional and institutional one-day faculty development courses yearly which provide further opportunities for focused learning. Finally, the AACH sponsors a week-long training courses specifically for FITs, guides, facilitators and selected other participants, for which outside facilitators are hired. Workshops at these courses on content areas such as somatization, group process, facilitation, and learning theory, are specific resources designed to meet your content-oriented learning needs.

AACH Standards Document:

This is an extensive list of valuable goals and objectives, including core competencies specific to each phase of training.

Bibliography of Educational Resources:

The Academy has developed a core reading list of 125 items, as well as annotated data-base which contains many articles, audio- and videotapes, and other valuable learning resources. See FIT: Reading List for examples.

The Medical Interview: Clinical Care, Education, and Research:

Edited by Mack Lipkin, Jr., M.D., Samuel M. Putnam, M.D., and Aaron Lazare, M.D. (cofounders of the Task Force on the Medical Interview, precursor to AACH; Springer-Verlag, New York, 1995). This book is a great resource for your learning. (Available from AACH)

Personal Project (optional):

This is another opportunity to consolidate your learning and make a creative contribution to the learning and development of others. Examples range from designing a curriculum or research study to authoring an article on a relevant topic, creating a videotape, or writing a play. You can work individually or in groups. As with other training experiences, the specifics of your project will be negotiated with your guide. The opportunity to create a tangible product, one that can be shared with others and contribute to their growth, as well as yours, should be one of the most exciting aspects of your learning.
