FIT: Introduction

Since 1978, the American Academy on Communication in Healthcare (AACH), a national group of physicians and scholars committed to improving medical care through examining and modifying physicians' work with patients, has focused on teaching and research on the encounter between physician and patient. Its mission involves teaching physicians to work in person-centered ways with patients and learners. Academy leaders have pioneered innovative and effective methods of teaching physicians how to integrate the psychological and social aspects of their patients' lives with traditional bio-technical and disease-oriented approaches to care. Its membership is multi-disciplinary, including (and not limited to) internists, social scientists, pediatricians, family physicians, medical and surgical sub-specialists, and psychiatrists.

The primary goal of the AACH Facilitator Training Program is to train highly qualified facilitators for AACH regional, national, and one-day courses. We anticipate that graduates will also help others in their own professional settings become more facilitative teachers and clinicians as the result of this training, and will be a continuous source of renewal and invigoration for the AACH mission. Our facilitator training program rests upon two basic assumptions:

• learners can usefully identify their own needs, goals, objectives and behaviors, as well as self-assess progress
• teachers not only impart knowledge and skills, they also create a nurturing environment rich in educational resources through which learners are empowered to learn and to grow personally

Core competency areas include the following:

• facilitation and interactional skills at the individual and group levels, relative to personal growth and skills development
• psychosocial aspects of medicine
• the provider-patient relationship

By showing interest in our training program, you have identified yourself as one of a growing group of individuals who are interested in person-centered clinical and educational practice. As you enter the training process, you will become an integral part of this committed and talented community of learners. We anticipate that you will find the experience of learning and growth rewarding, exhausting, and fun.
