Purpose of Fellowship

The Executive Committee and the Board of Directors of the American Academy on Communication in Healthcare proposes to honor publicly those of its members who make substantial contributions to the accomplishment of the Academy's mission by awarding to those individuals the honor of Fellowship in the Academy.

Criteria for Fellowship

To be considered for fellowship an individual must be a member in good standing of the Academy for a minimum of two years. In addition, the individual must meet at least one of the following criteria for participation in the AACH community:

  • Two years of service on an AACH committee(s) or the Board of Directors
  • Presentations given at two AACH meetings
  • Membership in good standing for 5 years
  • Earn a total of 12 points from any combination of the following activities or accomplishments:
    • service to the academy
    • holding office (4 points per 2 year term)
    • chairing a committee (3 points per 2 year term)
    • non-office holding board member (3 points per 3 year term)
    • forum director or co-director (2 points per Forum)
    • course director (2 points per course)
    • major product development (4 points)
    • minor product development (1 point)
    • new course development (2 points)
    • mentoring - FIT or research (2 points per student)
    • serving as AACH faculty member (2 points per course)
    • scholarship
    • papers published (3 points per paper, chapter or book)
    • relevant presentations at other meetings (1 point per presentation)
    • significant teaching in one's home institution
    • course director, designing new course/materials (5 points)
    • in the field of healthcare communications and relationships
    • OR 5+ years of teaching/facilitation (3 points)

Selection Process for Awarding Fellowship

Each June and December, an announcement requesting nominations for fellowship and detailing the criteria for the nomination and selection process shall be placed in Medical Encounter and disseminated through other Academy communications.

While Academy members shall be invited to submit nominations, self-nomination is welcome. Nominating letters and at least one other letter of support from an AACH member shall be submitted to the Academy office by February 1 and August 1 of each year.

The Nominating Committee will review all nominations and supporting documentation and will forward to the Board of Directors the names of all nominated individuals who qualify for fellowship according to these criteria. The Board may approve qualifying candidates at its sole discretion. Fellowship may be conferred by a majority vote.The honor of Fellowship shall be announced at the Academy's Research and Teaching Forum. A certificate of Fellowship shall be given to each new fellow.Maintenance of Fellowship. To continue to use the title of Fellow of the American Academy on Healthcare Communication (FAACH), an individual must maintain membership in good standing in the Academy.
