The American Academy on Communication in Healthcare (formerly American Academy on Physician and Patient) has dedicated more than 25 years to research, education, and professional standards in patient-doctor communication. Its goal is to change the practice of medicine by helping clinicians and patients, and learners and teachers relate more effectively. AACH had its roots in the Task Force on the Medical Interview, which was formed in 1978; AACH was officially organized in 1993 by the leadership of the task force. We are proud of our past work and energized by innovative projects now in development or already underway in the Academy. The AACH Board of Directors recently endorsed an ambitious mandate; namely, "to disseminate the practice of healthcare relationships and communication that integrate best medical practices with patients' and clinicians' values, needs, and choices." We anticipate an expanding role in the development of communications instruction programs at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels of medical training as well as in the world of our patients. Mission Statement:AACH fosters best patient care by advocating a relationship-centered approach to healthcare communication, education and research. AACH accomplishes this through: - Focusing on strengths, resources and needs of patients, physicians and other professionals - both as unique individuals and in relationships to one another.
- Developing skills that integrate biological, psychosocial and social domains.
- Applying existing scholarship from multiple disciplines and developing new knowledge through research.
- Promoting collaborative relationships between doctors and patients, teachers and learners, and other involved professionals.
- Incorporating core values of respect, empathy and genuineness in human relationships and the importance of self-awareness in all activities.
