Dr. William D. Clark is a founding member, Fellow and past president of AACH. He retired from clinical practice as a general internist and Medical Director of the Addiction Resource Center in Bath, Maine in 2004. Bill is currently managing editor of "doc.com: An interactive learning resource for healthcare communication,” published on the world-wide web by AACH and the Drexel University College of Medicine. (access at www.AACHonline.org) He remains active in other Academy projects from time to time.
After finishing Harvard Medical School, residency in Seattle and Boston, Fellowship in Health Services research, and a hitch as an Epidemic Intelligence Service officer in the Public Health Service, he began pursuit of interest in physician-patient relationship and communication with an emphasis on substance abuse issues in 1970. For several years he was Program Director of the Cambridge General Internal Medicine Residency, and active on the Harvard faculty. Bill decided to move family/ career to a quieter setting in coastal Maine in 1987. Dr. Clark completed "Courage and Renewal” facilitator training with Parker Palmer in 2007. His publications include papers and chapters about physician-patient relationship and communication, alcohol and drug problems and physician self-awareness. He continues as a Lecturer in Medicine at Harvard Medical School, Boston, Massachusetts. He will complete a 6-year term as a Trustee (non-alcoholic) on the General Service Board of Alcoholics Anonymous in 2010.
