The American Academy on Communication in Healthcare (AACH) has dedicated more than 30 years to research, education, and professional standards in patient-clinician communication. Its goal is to change the practice of healthcare by helping clinicians and patients, and learners and teachers relate more effectively. AACH has its roots in the Task Force on the Medical Interview, which was formed in 1978; AACH was officially organized in 1993 by the leadership of the task force under the name of the American Academy on Physician and Patient. The name was changed in 2006 to the American Academy on Communication in Healthcare to better signify its inclusion of all disciplines.
Conferences such as the Research and Teaching Forum and the International Conference on Communication in Healthcare provide the healthcare community with a venue to share the latest research in healthcare communication and professional networking. The ENRICH Course (Enriching Relationships and Communication in Healthcare), as well as one-day courses, provide opportunities to learn and improve communications skills through large and small group activities.
