Beth Lown

Beth Lown, MD, FAACH is an internist at Mount Auburn Hospital, Cambridge, MA, and Assistant Professor of Medicine, Harvard Medical School. She graduated Tufts University School of Medicine in 1977 and trained at Tufts New England Medical Center Hospital and Boston’s Beth Israel Hospital. She graduated the Harvard Macy Program for Physician Educators, the Rabkin Fellowship in Medical Education, and the Facilitator Training Program of the American Academy on Communication in Healthcare.

 

She is a past President and current Board member of the American Academy on Communication in Healthcare (AACH). She is also a member of the Board and Executive Committee, and Director of the Programming Committee of the Kenneth B. Schwartz Center in Boston, MA. She leads Schwartz Center Rounds at Mount Auburn Hospital.

 

Dr. Lown is involved in faculty development in medical education in several venues.

She co-directed the Advanced Fellowship in Medical Education at the Carl J. Shapiro Institute for Education and Research at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, and co-directs the Fellowships in Medical Education of the Academy at Harvard Medical School, and the Fellowship in Medical Education at Mt. Auburn Hospital. She is Director of Faculty Development at Mount Auburn Hospital. She has led various medical education research efforts including the evaluation of the Harvard faculty fellowships in medical education.

 

Dr. Lown writes about and teaches interpersonal and communication skills, and a relationship-centered approach to the psychosocial and emotional aspects of healthcare to learners across the continuum of medical education. She gives frequent presentations, develops and evaluates curricula, and publishes work about healthcare communication and medical education. She has served on the National Board of Medical Examiners’ Task Force on Communication Skills, Committee for Standard Setting, and serves on the Case Materials Development for Clinical Skills Step 2 of the United States Medical Licensing Examination.

 

Dr. Lown collaborates with national and international partners in teaching and research in healthcare communication and medical education. She has worked with international colleagues on inter-professional education in shared decision making and decision support. She is a member of an international research collaborative aimed at understanding and evaluating outcomes of patient and family member involvement in health professional education.
